Origin and meaning of the name

Marina is the feminine form of Marinus . The name is derived from the Latin marinus ("coming from the sea, belonging to the sea, living by the sea"). In Germany, the name became common in 1959 through the hit Marina by Rocco Granata ; he used the name of a brand of cigarettes.

Independently of this, the first name also exists in Japanese with different meanings.
