Mario Brugnera (born February 26, 1946 in Venice ) is a former Italian football player. The player was mainly active for Cagliari Calcio and won with the club in the 1969/70 season its first and to this day only Italian football championship.
Career
Mario Brugnera was born on February 26, 1946 in Venice , northern Italy , and began his footballing career with the local but nationally insignificant club Nettuno Venice. From there he was signed by Fiorentina and played in the first team of the Tuscan club from 1963. The Fiorentina was then part of the top teams of Italian football and could in the 1950s and 60s celebrate its still only two championships. In Brugnera's active time at Fiorentina, however, only won the Coppa Italia in 1965/66 . After successes with CFC Genoa , US Palermo , CC Catania , AC Milan and Inter Milan, they reached the final and met the underdog US Catanzaro from Serie B there . With Mario Brugnera in the starting line-up, however, coach Giuseppe Chiappella's team needed extra time to triumph 2-1 with a goal from Kurt Hamrin one minute before the end of that extra time.
Mario Brugnera played a total of 1963 to 1968 for Fiorentina and made 71 league games for the club during this time, in which the midfielder scored 23 goals. In 1968 he moved to the up-and-coming Sardinian club US Cagliari , which was just about to establish itself in the upper reaches of Serie A. In his first season in Sardinia Brugnera won the runner-up with US Cagliari behind his previous club, Fiorentina. The 1969/70 season, on the other hand, was the most successful ever in the history of the club, which had long since been renamed Cagliari Calcio . Under coach Manlio Scopigno and with players like Luigi Riva , Angelo Domenghini and Enrico Albertosi , the season ended in first place with a four-point lead over Inter Milan. Thus the team reached the first championship ever in the history of Cagliari Calcio. To date, the club has not managed to repeat this title win. After the championship in 1970, things slowly but steadily went downhill for Cagliari, in 1976 you had to go into the second division just six years after winning the title. Mario Brugnera interrupted his activity at Cagliari Calcio for only one season. In the 1974/75 season he was on the pitch for Bologna FC . He then returned to Cagliari and played for the Sardinian club until 1982, where he was captain from 1978 until his departure in 1982. However, it was not possible to build on the old successes at this time. After relegation in 1976, Cagliari Calcio played second class for three years in a row before returning to Serie A in 1980. There they stayed until 1983, before he was relegated again, which brought the club to Serie B for a longer period of time.
Mario Brugnera left Cagliari Calcio in 1982 after a total of 328 missions. So he led the list of players with the most games for Cagliari Calcio for a long time and is still in second place in this classification. Only Daniele Conti , who is still active for Cagliari , has more games than Mario Brugnera. He played for a year at the amateur club AC Carbonia from 1982 to 1983 before ending his football career in 1983 at the age of 37.
