Mario Rom (* 1990 in Hall near Admont ) is an Austrian jazz musician ( trumpet , composition ).

Live and act

At the age of eight, Rome received his first trumpet lessons from his father, with whom he also played in the school big band in Admont. From 2004 to 2013 he studied classical trumpet at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz with Josef Eidenberger . He took further lessons a. a. with Laurie Frink , Ralph Alessi , Ellery Eskelin , Harold Mabern , Eric Alexander , Thomas Gansch , Klaus Schuhwerk and Frits Damrow .

With the band Generations Unit he recorded a CD in 2011 under the direction and contribution of Adrian Mears . He founded his trio Interzone (with Lukas Kranzelbinder and Herbert Pirker ), which released his first album in 2012 and his third album in 2017. He toured with him through Germany, Morocco, Mexico, China, Israel and North America. The trio also forms the core of Kranzelbinder's septet Shake Stew ( Golden Fang , 2017), which has been one of the most important formations on the Austrian scene since it was founded in 2016. He also worked with Christoph Cech , Luis Bonilla , Michael Mantler , Harri Stojka , Dave Liebman , Harry Sokal , Andrej Prozorov , but also with the Janus Ensemble, Studio Dan, Memplex, Max Brand Ensemble , Jazzwerkstatt Wien and Nouvelle Cuisine . He can also be heard on albums by Fiva , Lia Pale and Harry Pepl . Kranzelbinder brought him to the SWR New Jazz Meeting in 2018 with Fiston Mwanza Mujila and the musicians Johannes Schleiermacher , Mona Matbou Riahi , Gregory Dargent and Dave Smith .

In November 2019 Mario Rom was appointed professor for jazz trumpet at the Institute for Jazz and Improvised Music at the Anton Bruckner Private University. In Erwin Wagenhofer's film But Beautiful - Nothing Exists Independent (2019), he is portrayed alongside Lucia Pulido and Kenny Werner .

Prizes and awards

Rome received several first prizes at Prima la musica ; In 2007 he was the winner of the Marianne Mendt Jazz Competition. In 2010 he was elected to the band "Generations Unit" at the jazz meeting in Frauenfeld.
