Satu Marjatta Rasi (born November 29, 1945 in Punkalaidun ) is a Finnish diplomat and politician of the National Collection Party . She was the Finnish ambassador to India from 1991 to 1995 and the Finnish ambassador to Austria from 2009 to 2013 .

In 1969 Marjatta Rasi graduated from Helsinki University with a bachelor's degree in law ( LLB ) .

Diplomatic career

In 1970 she became an attaché in the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her first assignment abroad was in 1972 as the second embassy secretary in London , and from 1974 in the same position in Paris . From 1977 to 1979 she was first departmental secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from 1979 to 1983 envoy to the Permanent Mission of Finland to the United Nations . In this function, for example, in 1982 she was a member of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations . From 1983 to 1986 she was envoy in the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1986 she became director of the UN section of the ministry's political department. From 1987 she was Finland's Deputy Representative to the United Nations. In this role she was the responsible chairman of the committee for Resolution 661 of the UN Security Council , in which sanctions against Iraq were decided after the invasion of Kuwait .

In 1991 she had her first assignment as Finnish ambassador. As the successor to Jyrki Aimonen , who became ambassador to Poland , she became ambassador in New Delhi . She was co-accredited for Bangladesh , Sri Lanka , Nepal and Bhutan . In Nepal, it was also from 1992 by a chargé supported. The first Finnish ambassador to Kathmandu became Kalevi Ahti that same year (1992) .

In 1995 Marjatta Rasi became Director General of the Department for International Development Relations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From June 1, 1998 to 2005, she was Finland's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. During this time, she was a board member of the International Peace Academy (now International Peace Institute), a United Nations-affiliated research and development organization, from 2000 to 2002, and from 2002 to 2003 Vice President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

She then returned to Finland and was Ministerial Director for Development Policy and Cooperation Issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2009 , a rank equivalent to Undersecretary in Finland . During this time she became a member of the Advisory Group of the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) of the United Nations in March 2007 .

In 2009 she became the successor to Kirsti Kauppi as ambassador to Austria. The accreditation took place on October 14th, 2009 with Federal President Heinz Fischer . She was also the Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Organization of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBTO) ). All of these organizations are based in Vienna . In 2013 she was replaced by Anu Laamanen in Vienna .

In the 2014 European elections , she is running for the conservative National Collection Party together with Kai Pöntinen .
