Mark A. Carleton
Mark Alfred Carleton (born March 7, 1866 near Jerusalem , Monroe County , Ohio , † April 25, 1925 in Paita , Peru ) was an American agronomist, phytopathologist and mycologist . In the first two decades of the 20th century, he forced the Wheat Belt growing Siberian rust fungus resistant varieties of durum wheat . In 1908 Carleton was President of the American Society of Agronomy. The agronomist was awarded the Knight's Cross of the French Order of Merit, Ordre du Mérite agricole .
Live and act
The parents first came to Ohio from Pennsylvania and took over a farm in Cloud County , Kansas in 1876 . Carleton studied agronomy in Manhattan (Kansas) from 1884 to 1887. He graduated from Kansas State University and then researched rust fungus occurrences in grain under Albert Spear Hitchcock . During his research, Carleton had observed how Mennonites tried to make Siberian wheat varieties indigenous to the United States, albeit unsuccessfully. So Carleton learned Russian, went to Siberia in 1898 on behalf of the United States Department of Agriculture (he had worked there since 1894) and brought home the Kubanca variety in 1899.
In 1919 Kansas was grown almost 100 percent from Carleton's seeds. In 1918, the successful agronomist left the Department of Agriculture. During the last years of his life, Carleton worked in Central and South America for the United Fruit Company . In 1925 he died of malaria in Peru.

Carleton married Amanda Elizabeth Faught on December 29, 1897 of Kingman, Kansas. The couple had four children.
