Mark Santer (born December 29, 1936 ) is a British Anglican theologian and university professor . He was Bishop of Birmingham in the Church of England from 1987 to 2002 .

Santer was born to Reverend Canon Eric Arthur Robert Santer and his wife Phyllis Clare Barlow. He attended Marlborough College and studied at Queens' College of the University of Cambridge . In 1963 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1964 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1963 to 1967 as assistant vicar ( Assistant Curate ) in Cuddesdon near Oxford . At the same time he was a tutor at Ripon Theological College Cuddesdon . He was then from 1967 to 1972 Dean and Fellow of Clare College at the University of Cambridge. From 1968 to 1972 he was assistant lecturer in theology at the University of Cambridge. From 1972 to 1981 he was Principal of Westcott House Theological College , Cambridge . In 1981 he was ordained a bishop . From 1981 to 1987 he was as "Bishop of Kensington" Suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of London in the Church of England. In 1987 he became Bishop of Birmingham in the Church of England , succeeding Hugh Montefiore . In 2002 he retired. He was succeeded as Bishop of Birmingham by John Sentamu . After his retirement, he served since 2002 as Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Worcester .

Santer was a staunch opponent of the celebrations initiated by the Birmingham City Council, which were given the name " Winterval ". This was a campaign carried out for reasons of political correctness , in which the term Christmas was deliberately left out in order to avoid discrimination against the non-Christian population of Birmingham. Santer thought the campaign was ridiculous; Rather, this is tantamount to censoring Christianity.

Santer was married twice. In 1964 he married Henriette Cornelia Weststrate († 1994). The marriage had three children, a son and two daughters. In 1997 he married Sabine Boehmig Bird for the second time.

Membership in the House of Lords

Santer served in his capacity as Bishop of Birmingham from September 1994 to late May 2002 until his retirement as Bishop of Birmingham as Spiritual Lord of the House of Lords .

A total of 37 contributions by Santer from the years 1995 to 2002 are documented in Hansard . He made his inaugural address on April 5, 1995 in the context of a debate on probation training in the UK. On May 23, 2002, he last spoke during his tenure in the House of Lords.
