Marko Jantunen (born February 14, 1971 in Lahti ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played for the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League from 1988 to 2010 .

Career

Marko Jantunen began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Hockey-Reipas , for whose professional team he made his debut in the I divisioona, the second Finnish division, in the 1988/89 season. In the following season he succeeded with his team promotion to the SM-liiga , in which he spent another two years at Hockey-Reipas, before he moved to KalPa Kuopio in the top Finnish league for the 1992/93 season. In the following season the winger was runner-up with TPS Turku . He contributed to this success with 66 points scorer in 59 games. With 29 hits in the main round, he was also the top scorer in the SM-liiga .

In the summer of 1994 he signed a contract with Västra Frölunda HC from the Swedish Elitserien . In the 1995/96 season he was runner-up with Sweden. In the playoffs he was with 16 scorer points, eight of them goals, both top scorer and top scorer of all Elitserien players. The 1996/97 season he began with the Calgary Flames , who had selected him in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft in the eleventh round as a total of 239th player. For Calgary he was a total of three games in the National Hockey League on the ice, while he otherwise scored eight goals and 16 assists in 23 games for their farm team , the Saint John Flames , in the American Hockey League . Before the end of the season he returned to Västra Frölunda, for which he was active until 1999.

From 1999 to 2003 Jantunen was under contract with Färjestad BK . With this he became Swedish champion in the 2001/02 season . In 2001 and 2003 he was also runner-up with the FBK. He then returned to his Finnish homeland, where he was on the ice at Jokerit Helsinki in the SM-liiga for the next two and a half years . With the capital club he was also runner- up in the 2004/05 season . After he started the following season at Jokerit, he finished it in Sweden at Timrå IK . From 2006 to 2010 he played for his hometown club Pelicans Lahti, where he then ended his career at the age of 39.

International

For Finland , Jantunen took part in the junior division of the U18 European Junior Championship in 1989 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 1991 . At the U18 European Championship in 1989 he won the bronze medal with his team. In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 1997 World Cup and the 2005 Euro Hockey Tour .
