Markos Botsaris ( Greek Μάρκος Μπότσαρης , Albanian  Marko Boçari ; * 1788 in Souli , Epirus region ; † August 21, 1823 near Karpenisi , Evrytania ) was a military leader of the Suliots during the Greek Revolution .

Life

Markos Botsaris was the son of a souliotic family. His father Kitsos Botsaris was murdered in 1809 on behalf of Tepedelenli Ali Pascha .

In 1803 he crossed over to the Ionian Islands , where he entered the service of a Suliot regiment in French pay.

In 1814 he joined with other Suliots of the Greek Patriotic Society Filiki Eteria ( Φιλική Εταιρεία ). At the outbreak of the Greek Revolution, he was distinguished by leadership qualities in the fighting in western Greece, especially in the defense of Mesolongi .

On the night of August 21, 1823 he led the attack at Karpenisi with 240 Suliots against 4000 Turks, who formed the vanguard of Mustai Pasha's siege army . The Turks were defeated, but Botsaris himself also fell. He was buried in Mesolongi.

Markos' brother, Kostas Botsaris , who fought at Karpenisi, completed the victory and continued to live in Greece as a general and senator. He died in Athens on November 13, 1853 . Born in 1813, Dimitrios Botsaris , a son of Markos, was three times minister of war under the kings Otto I and George I. He died in Athens on August 17, 1870.

His memory is preserved and cherished in many popular ballads in Greece. In the Albanian and Greek folklore there is an iso-polyphonic song about Markos Botsaris, which was recorded in writing in the early 19th century. The Swiss poet Juste Olivier wrote a poem for Markos Botsaris in 1825.

Streets in Greece and Albania ( Marko Boçari there ) and one in Paris are named after Markos Botsaris .
