Markstein ( Slovenian Mejnik ) is a village in the cadastral parish Sittich in the municipality of Feldkirchen in Carinthia .
Geographical location
If you follow the old main road (today: Turracher Straße ) from Feldkirchen to Klagenfurt in a southerly direction, you will come across the town of Markstein about four kilometers from Feldkirchen city center. Markstein has 551 inhabitants (2001 census).
history
The place essentially consists of two customs houses built at the time of the Napoleonic Wars (1804–1812), a mighty linden tree from the time of Maria Theresa (before 1780) and the still quite well-preserved boundary stone from 1809, the Markstein. It defines the old border between the Austrian Empire in the east and the " Illyrian Provinces " in the west, which were separated off in the Peace of Schönbrunn in 1809, in a north-south direction . To the north of it, another Schönmarkstein was found and further south on the heights of the Hohen Gallins a third stone was found, so that the borderline at that time is clearly marked.
The eponymous landmark
It is probably a sandstone from the quarry near Zwattendorf, which is still in use today, at the southern foot of the Gössberg or Veitsberg . The owner of the property on which the landmark stands also states that he lifted and cleaned the stone decades ago and that a weakly recognizable number came to light; but he could no longer say with certainty whether it was a six or a three. The stone was severely damaged by improper handling during the gunfire , which was widespread in Carinthia , and the tip was severed, but loosely put back on again. This means that the boundary stone can be viewed in its full size.
