The market church of St. Michael is a Roman Catholic mass chapel in the market town of Übelbach in Styria . Its history probably goes back to the second half of the 13th century. Today it is owned by the market town.

Location

The chapel is located directly in the district of Übelbach called Alter Markt. It was built diagonally above a former mining gallery.

history

The church was probably built in the second half of the 13th century. We find its first documentary mention in a document from 1460. It was built as a chapel for the miners of the nearby mine. Originally it was probably just a simple, rectangular hall. In the middle of the 15th century, it was expanded with the help of Niklas Röschl, who appeared as a founder, and brought into the form that is still preserved today. The chapel was repeatedly renovated in the 18th century. The originally Gothic flat ceiling was replaced by the existing one. The chapel has belonged to the market town of Übelbach since September 24, 1885. Renovation work was carried out between 1985 and 1993.

The small church building has a roof turret with an onion helmet and a bell.

The wide, almost square and essentially Romanesque nave has a baroque , stucco-decorated flat ceiling. Thick Romanesque wall remains in the southern and western parts of the chapel with a Romanesque arched window on the south side bear witness to its Romanesque origin. In the nave there are several picture fields in which the Adoration of the Magi , painted in 1722 , Maria Immaculata and the Annunciation are depicted. In the west of the nave there is a baroque gallery made of wood. On its parapet there are images of the apostles from the early 18th century. The one-bay , Gothic choir has a five-eighth end and is spanned by a star rib vault. During the renovation work in the late 20th century, wall foundations of a previous building were discovered under the choir, the location of which is recognizable today by the black floor slabs. The sacristy is built to the north of the choir and connected to it by a door from around 1500 with Gothic iron fittings. It is vaulted by a pointed barrel.

The high altar, designed in the Rococo style, was built around 1770. The altarpiece shows the archangels Michael , Gabriel and Raphael . On the upper picture Maria is shown with the child. There are also guardian angel statues designed in the manner of Philipp Jakob Straub on the high altar. On the side altars, erected in the first half of the 19th century, there are two pictures of St. Florian and Johannes Nepomuk painted by Matthias Schiffer around 1800 . In the choir there are consecration crosses painted on the wall from the construction period. On the front arch there is a presumably Gothic lecture cross. The flat ceiling of the nave originally consisted of three fresco fields from 1727, only one of which has survived . The pulpit dates from the end of the 18th century. The tabernacle was erected around 1840. In addition, there is an eternal light traffic light designed in the Rococo style and two portraits of Mary of Victory and St. Cecilia from the 18th century in the chapel. On the outside there is an overpainted fresco above the entrance portal.

The small baroque organ was installed by Johann Georg Mitterreiter in 1745. There is an inscription on the wind chest of the organ donated by Magdalena Schrökhenfux, which indicates the year of installation. It has 360 pipes and six registers . Its housing from the 18th century is marbled gray-green and decorated with gold-plated carved ornaments.
