Matthias Schiffer (* 1744 in Puch in Styria , † 1827 in Graz ) was an Austrian painter , draftsman and graphic artist in the classicist era .

Life

Schiffer worked as an architecture, landscape and fresco painter not only in Carinthia and Styria, but also in Bavaria , Croatia and Hungary . His origins and the style of his works earned him the title of “last monumental painter of the Styrian Baroque”, who owes himself not only to the roots of his oeuvre in the art of the 18th century, but also to the high level of his work. Among other things, he decorated a shooting range built in Grätz in 1795 with ceiling paintings . In the last few years he suffered from increasing weak eyesight, so that some paintings were left unfinished. His son Franz Josef Schiffer became a stage designer and later worked in Klagenfurt and Bruck and the Mur, he ran a magic lantern in Graz . The landscape painter Anton Schiffer (1811–1876) was his son and Schiffer's grandson. Another son was named Franz (Franciskus) Theodor Schiffer, he was baptized on April 25, 1783 as the son of the painter "Matthias Schifer" in the church of St. Ulrich in Regensburg.
