Architecture and history

It is a complex of buildings from the 19th century that was built on the land of several historic half-timbered buildings that were previously there.

At this point there was originally a Countess-Stolberg house, which was left by Count Wolf Ernst zu Stolberg to the first wife of court preacher Wehler zu Stolberg (Harz) . Wehler sold it in 1640 to the pastor Primerius St. Sylvestri subject to a right of first refusal, then the property after various changes of ownership shines again returned to stately property to be, because on February 28, 1731 the house of Count is Christian Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode under Reservation of the right of first refusal sold to Wilhelm Haberstroh. After further changes of ownership, it came to the economist Theodor Zeisberg, and after his death it was sold to the straw hat manufacturer Hahne by the guardian of his underage daughter. In 1925 the private property was sold to the German Reich ( Deutsche Reichspost ).

In 1888 the half-timbered house was demolished and by 1890 the building contractor August Niewerth built a new brick building, which he rented to the Reichspost. In 1929 the extension took place by adding a part of the building up to Kanzleistraße, which has the distinctive tower.

During the bombing raid on Wernigerode on February 22nd, 1944, the tower and the front of the building in particular were severely damaged. At that time, a British bombing group attacked the cities of Halle (Saale) and Magdeburg . On the return flight, the remaining explosive bombs were dropped on Wernigerode. According to contemporary statistics, this attack cost 166 people their lives. 112 houses were totally destroyed.

Until 1996, the post office used the entire building complex as the main post office. After the building was privatized, large parts of it were converted into a hotel and restaurant; only the counter hall was still used by the post office. In 2008, the post office gave up its location and moved to the Burgstrasse 19 branch .

In the local register of monuments , the house is listed as a monument under registration number 094 02497.
