Markus Ulrich Diethelm (born October 22, 1957 ; resident in Zurich and Schübelbach ) is a Swiss manager . He currently works as Group General Counsel (chief counsel ) and member of the Executive Committee of UBS Group AG.

Career

education

Diethelm has a Degree in Law ( lic. ) Of the University of Zurich and a Master Accounts and a PhD of Stanford Law School . He is admitted to the bar and is admitted to the bar in Zurich, Geneva and New York City ( New York State Bar Association ).

In 1983 he began his career at the Zurich law firm Bär & Karrer and was an auditor at the District Court of Uster from 1984 to 1985 . He worked for Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison (New York City) as an overseas employee in 1988 and a year later at Shearman & Sterling (New York), where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions. From 1992 to 1998 he worked for the law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher (Los Angeles) in their offices in Brussels and Paris, where he focused on corporate matters, securities transactions , litigation and regulatory investigations.

Swiss Re

In 1998, Diethelm as Group Chief Legal Officer in the Swiss Re and was from 2007 to the Executive Committee. Under his leadership, Swiss Re implemented a successful global model for the Group's legal and compliance organization. In addition, Diethelm played a key role in the company's World Trade Center litigation and in major corporate development transactions.

UBS

Diethelm was appointed to the Executive Committee in 2008 and was appointed Group General Counsel of UBS. From 2015 to 2016 he was a member of the executive board of UBS Business Solutions AG . In 2009, Diethelm negotiated a tax fraud investigation with attorney for the US Department of Justice's tax department , Kevin M. Downing. UBS paid in a non-prosecution agreement 780 million US dollars , revealing several customer names. Diethelm subsequently also resolved tax disputes with the United Kingdom , Germany and Belgium.
