Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher ( short: Gibson Dunn ) is a global law firm in the legal form of an LLP . With over 1,300 lawyers in 20 offices, the law firm, which focuses on litigation, is one of the law firms with the highest turnover in the world.

Gibson Dunn is growing in Germany and has been represented in Munich since 2002 ; in 2016, another location was added in Frankfurt am Main .

history

In May 1872, business attorney and avowed Republican John Bicknell founded a new law firm in Los Angeles . After he merged with the democratic litigator Walter Trask in 1980, the firm gained its first key client in the form of the South Pacific Railway Company and grew quickly.

In 1897 the judge James Gibson joined the firm, who a few years later was to merge it with the law firm of the then Chief Justice of the City of Los Angeles, William Dunn, and his deputy, Albert Crutcher. This merger is considered to be one of the first attempts to form a modern, full-service large law firm and gave the firm its name, which still exists today.

Gibson Dunn expanded not only in their Californian home region and within the United States, but also internationally. Gibson Dunn set up offices in London and Paris as early as the 1970s. Since 2000 the company has expanded further in Europe, South America, the Middle East and Asia and now has 20 offices with over 1,300 lawyers. Gibson Dunn is best known today for his close connections in the US Congress - for example in investigations there - and for his influence on the Supreme Court . With an annual profit per partner of more than 3.3 million US dollars, the law firm is one of the most lucrative international law firms.

Well-known mandates (selection)

Gibson Dunn, unlike most leading corporate law firms, does not focus on the transaction business. Instead, the firm is widely recognized, especially in the United States, as one of the most prestigious litigation firms, having brought more than 100 fundamental cases to the United States Supreme Court . This includes:

  • Representation of the television broadcaster CNN in the controversial dispute over the accreditation of journalist Jim Acosta for the White House, which was withdrawn by US President Donald Trump after an escalated press conference,
  • Representing Apple in the much-noticed patent dispute with Samsung regarding the Galaxy Nexus (including obtaining a nationwide sales ban),
  • Representing Facebook in connection with the sensational data protection scandal involving Cambridge Analytica ,
  • Representing Mark Zuckerberg in the multi-billion dollar legal dispute with Paul Ceglia over ownership of Facebook ,
  • Representing the retail industry leader Walmart in a multi-billion dollar labor law model discrimination lawsuit,
  • Representing the media group Viacom (including Paramount Pictures , CBS and MTV ) in multi-billion dollar copyright proceedings against YouTube ,
  • Representation of the chip manufacturer Intel in various antitrust lawsuits worth billions of the competitor AMD and the European Union ,
  • Representing NBC Universal for breach of contract against Conan O'Brien in connection with the well-known Late Night Show ,
  • Representing the world's largest fruit and vegetable producer, Dole Food, in defending against billions in lawsuits from farmers in Nicaragua for alleged use of illegal pesticides and the alleged widespread destruction of domestic arable land based on them.
