NGC 6706 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Peacock on southern sky . It is estimated to be 169 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years across .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 4799 , IC 4784 , IC 4788 , IC 4800 .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on June 8, 1836 .
