Markus Hansiz (born April 25, 1683 in Völkermarkt ; † September 5, 1766 in Vienna ) was a Jesuit and historian.

Life

He taught in institutions of his order in Graz, Vienna, Neustadt, Klagenfurt and Rome, but his main interest was always research on church history. His aim in life was to write a German church history that would become for Germany what Ughellis Italia sacra was for Italy and Denis de Sainte-Marthes Gallia Christiana for France. He did not achieve this goal, but wrote a history of the churches of Lorch and Passau ( Metroplis Laureacensis cum Episcopatu Pataviensi chronologice proposita , Augsburg 1727) and a history of the Archdiocese of Salzburg ( Archiepiscopatus Salisburgensis chronologice propositus , Augsburg 1729).

In the years 1731–1754 he collected materials for the history of the dioceses of Vienna , Neustadt , Seckau , Gurk and Lavant . At the same time he was working on a history of the diocese of Regensburg . The history of the Regensburg diocese, De episcopatu Ratisbonensi prodromus (Vienna 1754) , appeared from these projects .

He was one of the most important church historians of his time.
