Markus Hauser (musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Markus Hauser (born November 30, 1971 in Näfels ) is a Swiss musician (alto, soprano, tenor, baritone saxophone, clarinet, flute), band leader , composer and music teacher .

Life

Markus Hauser began a musical career as a saxophonist at the age of 15. After two years at the St. Gallen Jazz School, he studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and graduated in 1993 with a major in performance . He continued to study with Kenny Garrett , Joe Viola , Hal Crook , George Garzone and Jerry Bergonzi . Equipped with a scholarship, he continued his education at the New York Manhattan School of Music . In 2011 he spent another study visit to Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The examination of South American idioms and jazz-like improvisations influence his most recent compositions.

Hauser not only realized his own projects as a band leader , he was also a " sideman " in various formations and ensembles. He toured with the Swiss big band leader Pepe Lienhard , with Udo Jürgens , with Brand New Rhythm in Mexico and Europe and with the “ Phil Dankner Seat Music Session” in Switzerland.

His projects as a band leader include the two volumes of “Boleros y Tangos”, “There's a Way Out”, “No Joke”, “NuTube” and “A Tribute to Art Pepper”. Art Pepper , the American alto saxophonist, is one of his idols. Hauser transcribed and arranged compositions by this artist.

Another project is “NuTube”, with which Hauser and Loris and Paolo Peloso are traveling. NuTube is a form of Nu Jazz that originated in the USA, Mexico, France and Brazil in the mid-1990s. Hauser took up social currents of this kind, such as those expressed in Herbie Hancock's Future Shock or the French St Germain , and developed his own musical concept from them. NuTube combines electronic music such as chillout or house with live instrumental music and is characterized by its polyvalent styles, rhythms and formations.

In addition to his work as a freelance musician, Hauser is a lecturer and examiner at universities and gives private lessons.

style

Influenced by the jazz of the 1940s and 1950s (including Charlie Parker , John Coltrane , Art Pepper) as well as studies with Kenny Garrett , George Garzone and Jerry Bergonzi , one of his strong stylistic anchors lies in hard bop jazz . Through study visits and concert tours in Europe and South America, his own compositions and solos have experienced stylistic extensions. Adoption and modulation of South American styles can be seen in the compositions and arrangements such as the two volumes "Boleros y Tangos".

Hauser's artistic identity (in addition to his native German, he speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese) can be described as polystylistic and cosmopolitan. He moves between jazz (swing, be bop, hard bop), South American music and funk, pop, rock.

«Hausertone»

Hauser developed new mouthpieces for saxophones. During his studies in the USA, the trained tool mechanic began researching and studying literature in order to develop his own mouthpieces. Together with his brother, he has been producing individual pieces tailored to the needs of saxophonists since 2004. In addition to saxophonists in Europe, musicians like Kenny Garrett and Chico Freeman have been playing with “Hausertone” mouthpieces since 2007.
