Martha Gohs, known as "Dorda", made her debut in 1899 in smaller singing roles at the Deutsches Volkstheater in her hometown Vienna, where she stayed until 1901. In addition, she was engaged at the theaters of Troppau (1901–1902), Linz (1902–1903), Graz (1901–1906) and finally at the Raimundtheater in Vienna (1908–1910) until 1910 . Then she was engaged as the first dramatic soprano at the Hamburg City Theater and stayed on the stage there until her departure in 1933 with the Feldmarschallin in the Rosenkavallier .

Until then she had given guest performances at a number of foreign theaters and opera houses, such as in Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Leipzig. She was engaged at the Chicago Opera from 1913 to 1914: in 1913 she sang Blanchefleur in the American premiere of Wilhelm Kienzl's opera Der Kuhreigen in French (under the title Le Ranz-des-vaches ).

Martha Winternitz-Dorda lived as a singing teacher in Hamburg until her death.

A memorial stone in the memory spiral in the area of the women's garden at the Ohlsdorf cemetery commemorates the artist.

family

Since 1903 Martha Winternitz-Dorda was married to the composer and conductor Arnold Winternitz (1874–1928), who worked at the Hamburg Opera. There she sang in the world premiere of his opera Meister Grobian in 1918 . After the death of her husband, she married the pianist Richard Goldschmied (1880–1941) a second time.

Services

Just like her first husband, Martha Winternitz-Dorda had a fondness for contemporary music both on the big stage and in the concert hall. So she appeared in Munich on September 12, 1910 in the world premiere of Gustav Mahler's 8th Symphony (“Symphony of a Thousand”). She was the first interpreter of the George songs by Arnold Schönberg and sang at the world premiere of Fifteen Poems op 15 for high voices and piano from The Book of Hanging Gardens by Stefan George (January 14, 1910 in Vienna).

In the world premiere of Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder (February 23, 1913 in Vienna) she sang the role of Tove, also at the premiere in Leipzig in 1914.

Schönberg (1949) described Martha Winternitz-Dorda as "very good and extremely musical". Her coloratura voice is described as "excellently developed".
