Martin Benno Schmidt

Martin Benno Schmidt (born August 23, 1863 in Leipzig , † November 27, 1949 in Mittenwald ) was a German pathologist .

Life

Schmidt was from 1890 to 1906 assistant to Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen at the University of Strasbourg . In 1906 he was appointed full professor at the newly founded Düsseldorf Academy for Practical Medicine (today Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf ). A year later (on April 1, 1907) he went to the University of Zurich as a professor of pathology , where he mainly dealt with rickets , osteomalacia , pyelonephritis and metastasis . In 1911 he was appointed professor of pathology at the Philipps University in Marburg . In 1913 he was appointed to Würzburg in the same function (professor for general pathology and pathological anatomy) . The Privy Councilor stayed there until his retirement on March 31, 1934. During the First World War , 1916/17 was rector of the university. Even after his retirement he was scientifically active until 1944.

The Schmidt syndrome (polyendokrines autoimmune syndrome type II) was described by him for the first time and bears his name.

Schmidt was friends with the pathologist Ludwig Aschoff .
