Martin Chalmers
Martin Chalmers (born November 11, 1948 in Bielefeld ; died October 22, 2014 in Berlin ) was a British translator , editor and author .
Life
Martin Chalmers grew up in Glasgow . His father was Scot and his mother came from Bielefeld. After studying history in Glasgow, Birmingham and Bochum , he began translating German authors into English. After several years in Birmingham and London , he lived with his wife Esther Kinsky in Hungary and Rixdorf , Berlin, where he died in 2014 after a long illness.
Chalmers translated books by Hans Magnus Enzensberger , Herta Müller , Hubert Fichte , Thomas Bernhard , Peter Handke , Alexander Kluge , Bertolt Brecht , Victor Klemperer and many other German-speaking authors into English. He was also editor and translator of Children and Fools , short stories by Erich Fried , and editor of Beneath Black Stars (2002), an anthology of contemporary Austrian prose. In 2004 Martin Chalmers received the Schlegel-Tieck Prize for The Lesser Evil , his translation of the third part (1945 to 1959) of Victor Klemperer's diaries.
In 2015, Esther Kinsky published their joint travel story Karadag October 13 about the Crimea .
