Martin Greif (Author)

Martin Greif (born February 4, 1938 in New York City , † November 17, 1996 in Ireland ) was an American English scholar and publicist .

Life

After completing school at Stuyvesant High School in New York City, Greif studied English at Hunter College , where he received a Bachelor's degree with honors in 1959 . Then Greif moved to Princeton University , where he graduated with honors in 1961 . Greif developed into an expert on Daniel Defoe's life . After completing his studies, Greif got a job as a university lecturer for English and literature and taught from 1963 to 1973 at various New York universities, including New York University . Greif also worked in publishing. From 1969 to 1973 he worked as editor-in-chief for Time Life Books and co-founded the publishing house Main Street Press , which he jointly ran with his partner Lawrence Grow in Clinton , New Jersey , from 1978 . The publisher specialized in the publication of books on Americana , handicrafts and restoration .

As an author, Greif wrote several books in the 1970s and 1980s. Griffin and his significant other later in life moved from Clinton , New Jersey to Ireland . There they lived in Ballinadee , County Cork . Greif wrote other books in Ireland on new subjects, including chess composition , puzzles and Irish subjects (the latter under the Irish pseudonym Mairtin O'Griofa ). In 1991 his partner Grow died of complications from AIDS and in November 1996 Greif also died of complications from AIDS in Ireland.

Greif is the uncle of heavy metal musician and lawyer Eric Greif .
