Martin Kaltschmitt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Martin Kaltschmitt (born April 18, 1961 in Heidelberg ) is a German energy economist and engineering scientist . He taught at the University of Stuttgart for a long time and is now a professor at the TU Hamburg and head of the Institute for Environmental Technology and Energy Economics (IUE) there.

Scientific career

From 1981 to 1986 , Kaltschmitt studied deep drilling technology , oil and gas extraction at the Clausthal University of Technology . From 1986 to 1988 he was a doctoral candidate at what was then the "Institute for Nuclear Energy and Energy Systems" (IKE) at the University of Stuttgart. In 1990 he received his doctorate with a thesis on "Possibilities and limits of electricity generation from wind power and solar radiation using the example of Baden-Württemberg". After a time as a postdoc from 1991 to 1992, he was head of the "Environment and Energy" department at the Board of Trustees for Technology and Construction in Agriculture (KTBL) in Darmstadt until 1993 .

He then returned to the University of Stuttgart, where he became head of the "New Energy Technologies and Technological Analysis" department at the Institute for Energy Economics and Rational Energy Use (IER). In 1997 he completed his habilitation at the University of Stuttgart with a thesis on regenerative energy generation. From 1992 to 2002 he held the lecture "Renewable Energies for Power Generation I, II" at the University of Stuttgart. Between 1998 and 2000 he did research at King's College in London and the University of California .

Since 2006 he has been head of the Institute for Environmental Technology and Energy Economics (IUE) at the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH).

Other activities

Kaltschmitt has been advising the EU Commission, various federal ministries, the DBU and the DFG since 1992 . From 2001 to 2008 he was managing director of the "Institute for Energy and Environment" (gGmbH) in Leipzig. Since 2002 he has also been chairman of the VDI specialist committee "Renewable Energies". From 2008 to 2010 he was Scientific Director of the German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ) in Leipzig. He is a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg .

He is also editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery, together with Hermann Hofbauer from the Vienna University of Technology .

Works

Kaltschmitt has written or edited numerous books and specialist publications on the subject of renewable energies . Together with Wolfgang Streicher and Andreas Wiese, he is the editor and one of the main authors of the standard work "Renewable energies. System technology, economic efficiency, environmental aspects", first published in 1993, which has been updated several times and was published in the 5th edition in 2013. In 2007 an English translation was published.
