Kersten received his school leaving certificate from the Falk Realgymnasium in Berlin in 1925 . He then worked as a university intern in various AEG companies and began studying physics at the TH Berlin in 1926 . In February 1931 he passed the diploma examination at the TH Berlin with distinction.

In October 1930 he began his 16-year career at Siemens & Halske AG . During this time he wrote over 20 scientific publications dealing with ferromagnetic materials.

According to his own statements, Kersten was never a member of the NSDAP or any of its members.

In 1942 he acquired the title of doctoral engineer at the TH Stuttgart . After the war, he was appointed to the TH Dresden in 1946 , where he became head of the physical institute. Three years later, in 1949, Kersten was elected a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . In 1947 he moved to the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena as a representative for Wilhelm Schütz , interned as a specialist in the Soviet Union , who returned to Jena in 1952. From August 1951 he took over the management of the laboratories at Vacuumschmelze AG in Hanau . In 1955, Kersten moved to RWTH Aachen University , where he was taken on as full professor for experimental physics with the main field of ferromagnetism .

Finally, in 1961, he was appointed President of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, which he remained until 1969. In addition, he was a member of the Comité International des Poids et Mesures (CIPM), President of the German Physical Society , member of the European Physical Society and on the Presidium of the German Standards Committee . In 1964 he became a member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .

In 1968 Kersten was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services .
