Martin Leydel (born May 13, 1747 in Poppelsdorf ; † July 13, 1817 in Aachen ) was a German master builder of classicism and Aachen city ​​planner .

Life

Leydel grew up as the eldest son of the builder Johann Georg Leydel and his wife Elisabeth Anna, nee. Schröder, with eight siblings in Poppelsdorf. After completing his training, he was significantly involved in several of his father's construction projects as a contractor (site manager, plasterer, etc.). Around 1770 he moved to Ahrweiler , where he got a job with Franz Feldmüller and in 1773 married his daughter Maria Anna. In 1774 he became cathedral councilor there, and his wife died in the same year. In 1777 he married a second time, now Maria Gertrud Hütten from Adenau , with whom he had twelve children.

In 1782 his younger brother Michael Leydel , who had previously settled as a master builder in the Prussian Krefeld and there a. a. In 1766 he built a representative house for the silk entrepreneur Johann von der Leyen as one of the first buildings in the fifth Krefeld city expansion. Martin Leydel gave up his location in Ahrweiler, moved to Krefeld and continued his brother's business there. In 1794 he built a. a. for Conrad von der Leyen a representative city palace in the classical style, today's Krefeld town hall.

In 1803 Leydel was appointed department builder of the Department de la Roer by the new French government and moved to Aachen. In 1815 he was hired by the now independent city of Aachen as city planning director. After his death in 1817 this position was taken over by his eldest son Adam Franz Friedrich Leydel .
