The Redoute in Bad Godesberg , a district of Bonn , is a ballroom from the electoral era that is used for events. The architectural ensemble of the Redoute includes the “House on the Redoute”, the “Redüttchen” and the electoral lodging houses along Kurfürstenallee. The Redoute stands as monument under monument protection .

location

The Redoute is on the corner of Kurfürstenallee and Am Kurpark (address: Kurfürstenallee 1) opposite the Bad Godesberger Kurpark , south of the city center. It is surrounded by its own park area, the so-called Redoutenpark.

history

The redoubt was built in the classical style from 1790 to 1792 under Elector Max Franz ; The architect was Martin Leydel . It should be used for balls and other court amusements - the name "Redoute" is an old name for a costume ball . The originally three-wing building was later supplemented by the oval garden hall between the two wings. The adjacent house on the Redoute , construction of which also began in 1790, served as a court and chamber theater until 1860, and then as a residential building. The Redüttchen was originally the gardener's house.

In 1792 Ludwig van Beethoven played in front of Joseph Haydn in the Redoute . There they agreed that Beethoven should undertake a second study trip to Vienna to become a master student of Haydn. A performance of the Magic Flute took place here in 1793 (first performance in 1791 in Vienna). In 1794 Bonn was occupied by the French . The cultural events in the Redoute ended, until it was banned by the Prussian government in 1819 it was used for gambling.

In the following decades the redoubt was used as a picture gallery and boarding school for girls until it was acquired by the Wilhelm Ludwig Deichmann family in 1853 . It was sold in 1856 to the private property of the befriended Cologne banker Victor Wendelstadt (1819–1884). Before the Wendelstadt couple moved into the house in May 1857, some renovation work took place, during which a rococo grille was installed from the garden of the Cologne Jesuit College Tricoronatum, which had previously been demolished for the new main train station . The garden of the Redoute was enlarged by that of the neighboring "Countess von Schladen'schen Haus" and was redesigned and equipped with greenhouses by the Cologne horticultural master Konrad Wilhelm Nelle . In 1879 a roofed bowling alley including an entrance pavilion was built in the garden , and in 1882 a tea house in its upper part . In 1884 the interior of the redoubt was rebuilt.

The property remained in the family's possession even after Wendelstadt's death and was used as a summer residence by Viktor Wendelstadt's son Richard (1857–1918) until the beginning of the First World War . After the war began, Richard Wendelstadt set up a hospital on the upper floor of the house , which was cared for by the doctor Hermann Wendelstadt (1862–1928) - a brother of Richard's.

After Richard's death, Hermann Wendelstadt sold the redoubt on January 22, 1920, including the garden with an area of 25 acres, for 1.15 million marks to the community of Godesberg, which it wanted to use again as a spa for cultural events. Some valuable furnishings remained in the possession of the Wendelstadt family and were transferred to the Viktorshöhe . The municipality of Godesberg had the redoubt expanded in 1925 by a garden hall for the new use according to plans by the local architect Walter Bühling (1887–1955) under the direction of the provincial curator Edmund Renard . In the same year, on the occasion of the millennium of the Rhineland , the local blacksmith Gottlieb Gernhard (1889–1967) created a large gate on Brunnenallee as the main entrance to Redoutenpark. The house on the Redoute was used as the mayor's house. In 1860 it became the private property of August von der Heydt's family in Wuppertal . After the Second World War it became city property. The Redüttchen served as a spa pharmacy in the meantime.

Appreciation

"The transition of the redoubt into the public ownership of the community is to be welcomed as a permanent safeguard of the most important monument from the later heyday of Godesberg, just like the Godesberg redoubt, the only interesting building from the reign of the last Cologne elector, the lovable Max Franz, is. "

After the establishment of the Federal Republic

State reception in the Redoute, 1956

After the Second World War , the redoubt was confiscated and used by Belgian armed forces in 1948/49 . On September 1, 1948, the evening reception after the opening of the Parliamentary Council in Bonn took place here. In April 1950 a club for members of the Allied High Commission opened in the Redoute , which in November 1953 became the “International Club Bad Godesberg e. V. ”and was now also open to diplomats from non-allied states and German representatives of public life. While the management of the club was taken over by the French High Commissioner as before, the patronage was in the hands of Federal President Theodor Heuss and the honorary presidency in that of Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer . The federal government had the right to pre-empt the accommodation of guests. At the beginning of the 1960s (status: 1962) the ambassador of Costa Rica temporarily resided in the redoubt , who also carried out his official business from here in the embassy chancellery .

From 1973 to 1976 the redoubt was extensively renovated and modernized. The federal government took on 70 percent of the costs of around 7.5 million DM. The Redüttchen converted the Günnewig company for around 900,000 DM. Since 1975 the Redoute has been operated by the subsidiary Günnewig Hotels & Restaurants . The halls and salons of various sizes were available for private celebrations, conferences and banquets. There was an associated restaurant in the Redüttchen. At the time of Bonn as the seat of government (until 1999), the federal government and embassies invited to representative receptions and events, e.g. on the occasion of Honecker's visit to the FRG (1987) - the Federal President also invited to official state receptions in the winter months, which otherwise took place at Augustusburg Castle in Brühl . The Federal President's annual New Year's reception took place here. The federal government contributed to the glamorous furnishings with various loans such as period furniture or carpets. The Bonn cultural office had made various pictures available.

In December 2010 the lease agreement between the city of Bonn and Günnewig ended. In 2011 the Redoute was subjected to extensive renovation measures, including the building technology, electrics, heating and ventilation technology and the kitchen. The renovation had become necessary in order to enable further use of the Redoute as an event location and a new lease. The cost of the renovation amounted to approx. 1.8 million euros.

Art exhibitions, chamber music evenings and other cultural events as well as receptions for the city district take place in the adjoining "Haus an der Redoute". The administration of the German Foundation for Monument Protection is on the upper floor . The Godesberg town hall and offices of the Bonn city administration are located in the "lodging houses" along Kurfürstenallee.

Referendum

A renewed renovation of the redoubt should be carried out after a majority decision of the Bad Godesberg district council on April 16, 2008 with the help of private investors. The investors were sought in the context of a European tender. Following this planned private renovation, the city administration should move from the Redoute to other buildings in accordance with this decision.

In April 2008, a public petition entitled “Save the town hall and the redoubt” began to request that the historic buildings remain in municipal ownership . At the end of January 2009, the citizens' initiative that carried out the referendum handed over 11,000 collected signatures to the city. On the basis of an expert opinion that described the referendum as "cashier", the administration intended to recommend to the City Council of Bonn to reject the referendum as inadmissible.

A further dispute over the referendum was not necessary, however, because no interested party came forward for the planned investment. The bidding process was therefore ended on January 17, 2009.

Stop of the Europe-wide tender

In February 2010, the City Council of Bonn canceled the Europe-wide tender for the city buildings on Kurfürstenallee. This cleared the way for a reorientation for the historic ensemble in need of renovation. The sale of the properties to private investors is to be “for the time being dispensed with”.

planning

At the beginning of 2011, the city of Bonn's municipal building management (SGB) began extensive renovation measures, which were estimated at around 1.8 million euros and were necessary for the building to be leased again. This work was completed at the end of 2011. In May 2011, the property office announced the new lease from October 2011. After completion of the tender, the administration of the city of Bonn was commissioned in July 2011 to conduct contract negotiations with the applicant named in the resolution and to bring about a corresponding contract conclusion.

At the end of 2011, the city of Bonn handed over the Redoute together with the Redüttchen to the new operator, Redoute Bonn GmbH with the shareholders Christoph von Borries and Michael Stern. After the renovation, the “Redüttchen” restaurant has a bright and upscale character in a country house style and is used for various events such as private celebrations, seminars and conferences. It has been open every day since November 2011 and offers regional cuisine.

For 2012 the new operator planned further investments and planned the realization of concerts together with the city's institutions.

Rehabilitation of technology

At the beginning of 2011, the renovation of the two buildings began, which was primarily limited to the technology. The SGB assumed the redoubt of around 1.629 million euros for the redüttchen of 143,000 euros. The redoubt involved, among other things, the roof renovation and the renewal of the heating center, ventilation, elevators, underground lines and electrical equipment. In the Redüttchen, general maintenance and the renewal of sanitary, heating, ventilation and electrical systems were carried out in order to drive out the "charm of the 1970s". The work was completed at the end of 2011.
