Martin Schlegel (born September 20, 1946 in Ahlen ) is a German game designer and statistician .

Life

The son of a small manufacturer grew up in the Münsterland district town of Ahlen, but graduated from high school in the neighboring town of Hamm, as only that had a mathematical and scientific high school. Even as a teenager he was a passionate chess player . In 1966 he became champion with the youth team of his chess club in North Rhine-Westphalia. After graduating from high school in 1967, he studied business administration at the University of Münster . With his degree in business administration in 1973, he became a research assistant at the city administration of Hagen in the department for urban research and statistics . From 1983 until he retired in 2004, he was chief officer there.

From 2001 to 2014 he worked as an honorary editor-in-chief of the magazine “Stadtforschung und Statistik”, the half-yearly magazine of the Association of German Urban Statisticians .

Schlegel has been developing his own board games since 1990. The game With Mose through the desert , developed together with his wife, a religious educator, was his first board game in 1996 that he was able to publish with a publisher. The game mechanics came from him, the theme design from her. From then on, further publications followed at short intervals. According to its own information, there were 42 published author's games that Schlegel developed by November 2014, including magazine publications and advertising games. Quite a few of these came out in boxes from game publishers.

His game West of Africa , which was published by ADC Blackfire Entertainment at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in 2016 , previously won first place at the 2015 Hippodice authors' competition in Herne. In 2017, his game Luther - the game about the life of the reformer - was published by Kosmos-Verlag together with his wife Erika Martin Luther.

Schlegel is married and lives in Hagen. He can often be found at the weekly games meeting in the AllerWeltHaus . He is also a member of the game designers ' guild .

approach

The starting point for Martin Schlegel's game studio is always the mechanism of a game. A topic is then found later, sometimes only in cooperation with the publishing company. Such was Aqua Romana thematically first (2000) an adventure game around Krokodilefangen, then an economic game to oil pipelines before the Roman aqueducts stake mechanism gave a final new design / face (2005). It often takes around a year to work on a game prototype until it is ready for publication. The game designer finds it completely normal to pursue five projects at the same time.

The basic philosophy of the game developer Schlegel is: short rules. The head should not be filled with rules. Alex Randolph's principle also applies to him : "A game is only finished when I cannot simplify it any further."
