Martin Strackerjan (born April 12 or April 22, 1607 in Hasseln near Halle (Westphalia) ; † January 10, 1657 in Oldenburg ) was a Lutheran theologian and briefly in succession superintendent of the counties of Delmenhorst and Oldenburg .

Life

Strackerjan was initially a teacher and only later embarked on a theological career. He came from a rural background in Westphalia . His father was a farmer and carpenter who, as a result of the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, was only able to pay his son the high school in Bielefeld for two years . Private lessons and private tutoring enabled Strackerjan to continue attending school, most recently in Herford . In 1626, possibly as early as 1624, he went to the University of Rinteln , where he was initially supported by donors, and was able to hold philosophical exercises himself two years after starting his studies and thus provide for a living. In 1630 the university awarded him a master's degree free of charge . After finishing his studies, he first became a teacher. From 1631 to 1634 he was rector in Hessisch Oldendorf . From 1634 he was rector at the grammar school in Osnabrück and from 1637 at the grammar school in Stade . There he finally changed to a clerical office and in 1638 he took over a pastorate at the Nikolaikirche. During his activity he published various philosophical and theological writings. In 1641 he accepted the quieter pastor's post in Otterndorf for health reasons and was appointed superintendent of the state of Hadeln just one year later .

Again in the hope of a quiet job to protect his health and for literary and scientific work, Strackerjan accepted the position of superintendent and court preacher of the Oldenburg sub-county of Delmenhorst in 1644. His sovereign, then 34-year-old Christian IX. , but died in 1647, so that Delmenhorst fell back to the County of Oldenburg under Count Anton Günther . He offered Strackerjan the superintendent of Oldenburg in 1652, which he initially rejected out of consideration for his health. In 1655 he finally accepted and during his short term of office he mainly took care of visitations to the parishes and the school system of the county. When he died in 1657, Matthias Cadovius was his successor.

family

Strackerjan married Catharina Steding (1615–1678) in 1637, the daughter of Theodor Steding , pastor and superintendent in Hessisch Oldendorf, and sister of the theologian Anton Steding in Osnabrück . The couple had seven sons and one daughter. The son Theodor was pastor in Abbehausen (1663–1669), the son Johann in Zwischenahn (1671–1716), the sons Hermann and Martin were counts officials.
