The Martinskirche in Bernburg (Saale) is a Protestant church of the Landeskirche Anhalt . It is located in the higher district of Bergstadt and was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1884–1887 by Conrad Wilhelm Hase and Max Kolde . With its 58 meter high church tower, it is visible from afar and shapes the cityscape. The church recently became part of the Martinszentrum Children's and Community Center , which has won several architecture prizes.

history

With the construction and commissioning of the Solvay works in 1883, the population of the Bergstadt district in particular grew rapidly. Bernburg even became the largest city in Anhalt for a short time . In addition, in 1886 the Franzkaserne (today the police building) was occupied by the 2nd Battalion of the Anhalt Infantry Regiment No. 93. For these reasons, the construction of the Martinskirche began in 1884, which was inaugurated on October 5, 1887 and was named after Martin Luther . Until 1891 it was still a branch church of the castle church , then its congregation became independent. The rectory at Martinsstrasse 5 was built in 1896, the "Diakonat" at 4a is a few years younger. The Rühlmann organ with 33 registers and pneumatic action was completed in 1900.

Peace prayers 1989

Despite the neighboring district office of the Ministry for State Security, the church became a central location of the change in Bernburg in 1989 . The first prayer for peace took place here on October 23rd. A week later the second prayer was followed by the first demonstration to Marx-Engels-Platz. The weekly demonstrations ended on December 11, 1989 with a silent march to Thälmannplatz.

21st century

Since 2004 the cross-generational "Martinszentrum" has been set up. The buildings in this center designed by Gunnar Volkmann were erected in 2006-07 and in 2008 were awarded the 2nd prize of the German Urban Development Prize. In addition to the award in the architecture prize of the state of Saxony-Anhalt in 2007, other prizes were also awarded. Numerous activities took place as part of the anniversary of the Reformation.

description

The church is a neo-Gothic sandstone building , the roof is covered with slate . The pointed west tower is 58 meters high and allows a view as far as the Harz when the visibility is good . The side aisles of the three-aisled hall church are very narrow, with the single-nave choir, the interior of the church is untypical for its design. The middle choir window shows Christ as ruler of the world , flanked by Luther and Melanchthon . The other windows are decorated with ornaments. The four evangelist symbols adorn the pulpit and the tiles of the choir. The sculptures on the altar show four people from the Old Testament : Abel , Melchizedek , Isaac and Aaron .

The furnishings of the building are largely original. Bronze bells and copper candlesticks were given up in the First World War . The bells have been made of cast steel ever since. During the conversion to the Martinszentrum, the pews were given to the Johanniskirche in Halle . The church received a cubic installation with functional rooms, changing rooms for physical education, a music room and a library on the organ gallery.

The two parsonages are also slate-covered sandstone buildings with the church's fittings. Church and rectory with registration numbers 094 60083 and 094 60700 were added to the state's list of monuments.

Martinszentrum

In the course of a conversion , the Martinskirche became part of a center with a Protestant elementary school as an open all-day school , day-care center and day-care center. Low wooden buildings have surrounded the church on three sides of the property since 2007. The courtyards of the facilities are open to the church, which, with its function rooms and library, is part of the overall concept. The school is based on the principles of the Jenaplans . Services will continue to take place in the Martinszentrum.

Partnerships

The community has maintained a partnership with the Luther Church in Frankenthal (Palatinate) since 1985, with regular encounters between adults and young people. In 1991, this was expanded to include the Frankenthal partner congregation of the reformed (URC) St Andrew's Church in Roundhay ( Leeds ). Another partnership has existed since 1986 with the North Community Church in Marshfield Hills (Massachusetts) , which is part of the United Church of Christ (UCC). Contacts with the Lutheran parish Parafia Ewangelicki-Augsburska Zielona Góra in Poland are far less intensive.
