Maryam Motallebzadeh ( Persian مریم مطلب زاده; * February 18, 1960 in Tabriz / Iran ) is an Iranian-German visual artist who works in the fields of painting , installations , video art , conceptual art and performance .

Life

Maryam Motallebzadeh was born the third child of a Persian merchant dynasty. Her family belonged to the well-to-do middle class. During her school education in Tehran / Iran , she took her first steps in the field of painting and received several awards for this. From 1979 to 1999 she ran her own gallery “Khanne chob” in Tehran, which exhibited design objects in addition to contemporary painting. On the side she attended a private academy to train as a painter.

In 1999 she moved to Germany, where she was a guest student at the Bremen University of the Arts . From 2001 to 2007 she studied fine art at the HfK Bremen. She was a student of Paco Knöller and Peter W. Schaefer , among others . As a guest she visited the International Academy of Art in Vallauris with Jürgen Waller . She completed her diploma in spring 2007. Her main focus is on painting and installations. In addition, she repeatedly deals with video art, also as a juror.

In 2009, Maryam Motallebzadeh was granted German citizenship. Numerous study trips took the artist to Asia, Africa, Russia, the USA and most European countries. She moved to Berlin at the end of 2017. She is a member of the International Society of Fine Arts (IGBK) and works alternately in her Berlin and Bremen studios.

From the beginning, Maryam Motallebzadeh's works attracted a great deal of attention from collectors, art enthusiasts and critics, and her works were recognized as having a high, independent painterly quality: “The artist often applies the material in many layers, allowing the underground, hidden, hidden things to shine through or scratches and scrapes towards the surface, an act that illustrates the potential for unrest in your art, ”stated the art critic Rainer Beßling on the occasion of the exhibition“ Who is Maryam? Who is Maria? ”In the Evangelical Academy Loccum . “She sews German words on a cloth with Persian script. She has found her spiritual home in the meeting point of both languages. Knotted ribbons refer to the hopes and utopian elements in her art: to the connection of the cultures between which she moves, to the happiness in mutual peaceful enrichment. "

The cultural scientist Reiner Matzker sees it similarly: “The journey to foreign countries or into the inner worlds of inspiration and perhaps change shape the work of Maryam Motallebzadeh. She is less, as is often mentioned, an intercultural artist, and in this sense, too, she is not a border crosser between cultures, ”he states in the catalog for the exhibition“ Wohin? Migration in Three Centuries ”. "She is now an internationally recognized artist in her field who is less based on her origins than on general art history, her intuition and intention."

This assessment of the work of Maryam Motallebzadeh is also shared by the art historian Beate Reese , director of the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr : “In her multi-media, multi-faceted work of films, performances, painting and writing, she aims to be playful, fictional and full of fantasy To explore and expand the boundaries of cultural identity schemes. In this sense, art is a form of possibility to overcome speechlessness and create understanding across cultural boundaries. "
