Mash (spelling: mash ) was a Swiss dialect rock band that became known with their hit Ewigi Liäbi . After a comeback in 2013, the band broke up again in mid-2015.

history

Early Years (1986-1996)

The four schoolmates Peter Müller, Stephan Annen, Bruno Schmidig and Diego Hediger founded the cover band The Queers in 1986 at the age of 17. Hansjörg Römer and two background singers soon joined the band. From 1988 they called themselves “Snap It” and gained local fame with various appearances. The first demo EP, Best Wishes , was recorded in 1990 in the “The Place” studio in Lucerne and the song Zrugg Zu Mier was released from it on the 1991 SZ Rock compilation from Central Switzerland . The national “1.CH/Szenen-Sampler” features the song Reklame-Boogie , which was later renamed “Stimorol”.

In 1993 the name “Snap It” was changed to “mash” (“mash” = first letter of the last name of the founding members) and Patrick “Padi” Bernhard joined the band as the new front man and singer. Two years later, the first album Hard to Ignore was released, which was created in the studio «Da Capo». The album contains original English compositions and has sold over 1000 times. Further appearances followed, which at the same time put the cover band under pressure.

Own dialect songs (1996-2000)

In autumn 1996 Bruno, Diego and Hansjörg decided to leave the band. The band almost broke up. But the three remaining members Padi, Steph and Peter decided not to continue as a cover band, but to continue with their own songs in (Swiss) dialect. In the spring of 1997 they found Markus Bösch (drums) and Thomas Tschan (keyboards) the necessary replacement for the band members who had left the band. It created its own dialect songs and an "unmistakable" mash "style in every song" - songs in pop-rock garb. In the "Jester Records" -Studio in Bern the first dialect demo EP was Usschnitt and produced 500 copies of the CD, because you did not believe in a success apart from English songs. The CD was sold out quickly.

Because of the daring Christmas cards that the band sent out for colleagues, Frank Baumann invited the band to a nude television appearance on his satirical program “ Ventil ” in January 1999 .

"We don't let ourselves be prostituted just to get on TV"

- Singer Padi Bernhard in an interview with the messenger of Urschweiz . Thanks to the song Thanks to Frank , which they wrote especially for the presenter, the TV appearance came on January 6, 1999.

Due to the fact that there were far fewer live appearances in 1999, there was initially discussion within the band about breaking up the band, as they had hoped for more appearances thanks to the television appearance. Instead, they burned their four new favorite songs (with nidvobärn, among others ) on a CD, called them supermash and sent them to around 20 radio stations in Switzerland.

The breakthrough (2000-2003)

In 2000, supermash also landed with Susanne Spreiter from Radio DRS 3 ( SRF 3 ), who liked it. So nidvobärn could be heard on DRS 3 and the song met with a positive response and the band was offered record contracts. Finally they signed with the Zytglogge Verlag in Bern . This was followed by a television appearance in the quiz program Risk of Swiss Television and gave the band media presence. The following album, nidvobärn , was christened on May 12th, 2000 in “Quai2” in Brunnen and released across Switzerland on May 13th.

"Mash" applied for the 2nd Big Brother season (on TV3 ) with the title song Grossä Brüäder , but was rejected by those responsible. 3000 pieces of the album nidvobärn had been sold by the end of 2000 . At the time, no one suspected that this was just the beginning. The last track on the album nidvobärn , Ewigi Liäbi , was - more than half a year after the album was released - played very often in the programs of choice on private radio stations. The number of concert inquiries increased and in August 2000 nidvobärn even entered the Top 100 of the Swiss charts and stayed there for a full 30 weeks (top placement 18th place). The band became known nationally - Tele Tell even shot a video clip of Ewigi Liäbi - and toured Switzerland for two years. In total, they were able to sell over 40,000 copies of the album and thus achieve platinum status in Switzerland. Even if Ewigi Liäbi never appeared as a single single and therefore could not enter the single charts, the song became known nationwide.

In 2002 the band switched from Zytglogge-Verlag to BMG Ariola (later Sony BMG ) and on August 12, 2002 released the follow-up album mash.erschti.hilf , which immediately took 16 in the charts with 17,000 copies sold Started. The public's interest grew steadily. After a successful and extensive concert series, Padi Bernhard, Stephan Annen, Peter Müller, Markus Bösch and Thomi Tschan decided in 2003 to pause for a whole year in order to produce a new album. At the same time, a fun punk version by Ewigi Liäbi of the Biel punk band QL rose from 0 to 6th in the Swiss charts and inspired finalist Carmen Fenk to write her final song in the first MusicStar season on Swiss television. She won this final with Ewigi Liäbi in 2004 and became Switzerland's very first «MusicStar». Ewigi Liäbi was henceforth a dialect hit.

Last album, the biggest Swiss love song and breakup (2005-2006)

In January 2005 the third album of the five Central Switzerland with the name 45minutä was released . The musicians stayed true to their style and tried to build on the success of the two previous albums. However, their expectations were not met. But although the album sold worse than its predecessors, the band toured Switzerland until the tour ended on December 17th, 2005 with the live concert “mash & fründä” at the MythenForum in Schwyz.

A year later the fourth and final (live) album called mash & fründä was released , which includes the band's last “real” concert.

On December 16, 2006, the band played in their original formation for the last time together on a stage. Then the singer and bassist broke up with the rest of the band.

At the end of 2006, thanks to numerous downloads, Ewigi Liäbi entered the singles chart and stayed in the charts for almost a year and a half. It kept returning to the charts until 2009 - for a total of 91 chart weeks. In 2007, Ewigi Liäbi was voted the greatest Swiss love song of all time in the “Lovesongs” category of the Swiss show The Biggest Swiss Hits .

Comeback (2013-2015)

In 2013 the band came back with a new line-up, only front man Patrick “Padi” Bernhard stayed. In February 2014 she released the comeback album MASH. Various concerts followed, but the band could no longer build on previous successes.

The band decided to break up again in summer 2015. "The effort is simply too big compared to the yield," Padi Bernhard is quoted on the website.

On November 12, 2015, Mash's official last concert was played in the Stadtkeller Luzern.
