Mathias Mertens (born September 30, 1971 in Hameln ) is a German-speaking author and lecturer in media studies .

Life

Mertens studied German , English and theater, film and television studies in Cologne and Hanover as well as book and media practice in Frankfurt am Main . From 1992 to 1994 he was a member of the Cologne authors' workshop , from 1996 to 1999 co-organizer and moderator of the “Literary Salon” in Hanover. After receiving his doctorate , he worked as a lecturer in media studies at the University of Hildesheim , where he completed his habilitation in 2008 with studies on the aesthetics of computer games and from 2008 to 2012 he was a professor for media aesthetics at the Institute for Media and Theater. In 2013 and 2014 he was a professor for media culture studies at the Institute for Media Culture and Theater at the University of Cologne. In addition to his research and teaching activities, he is the author of numerous articles and essays on digital culture , as well as the founder of Steinerei , the first German brick film festival, which has been held annually since 2005. Mertens interests also include the air guitar : He not only researches the topic, but also organizes the German championship in air guitar playing and performs regularly as an air guitarist himself.
