Mathilde Flögl
Mathilde Flögl , also Flöge (born September 9, 1893 in Moravia , Czech Republic , † July 18, 1958 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian painter , graphic artist and textile artist.
life and work
From 1907 to 1909 Flögl attended the Imperial and Royal Technical School for Weaving in Zwittau . From 1909 to 1916 she studied with Anton von Kenner , Josef Hoffmann , Alfred Roller , Adele von Stark , Oskar Strnad , Rudolf von Larisch and Franz Čižek at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. From 1916 to 1931 she was an employee of the Wiener Werkstätte and a member of the artist workshops in this. Among other things, she created freehand applied and stenciled murals in the apartments and business premises (Grabencafé) furnished by Josef Hoffmann. She was active in almost all areas of arts and crafts for the Wiener Werkstätte: ceramics , ivory , leather , wood, graphics and commercial graphics, enamel , glass decorations, fabrics, fashion, fashionable accessories, lace, tulle embroidery, fabric bags, wallpaper. For the anniversary publication in 1928 she did the compilation, the layout and in 1929 published the book: Die Wiener Werkstätte 1903–1928: The Evolution of Modern Applied Art. She worked on the portfolios “Die Mode” (1914/15) and “The Life of a Lady” (1916). From 1931 to 1935 she had her own studio specializing in fashion and interior design. She was a member of the Austrian Werkbund and the Viennese women's art. She taught in different schools and participated in exhibitions in different European cities. Her work is currently in museums all over the world, such as the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC , the Kyoto Costume Institute in Kyoto and the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna.
