Mathilde von Geldern

Mathilde von Geldern and Zütphen († October 28, 1247 or later) was a countess from the Wassenberg family and, by marriage, Countess von Nassau . She is a direct ancestor of the kings of the Netherlands and the Grand Dukes of Luxembourg .

Mathilde was the youngest daughter of Count Otto I von Geldern and Zütphen and Richardis von Scheyern-Wittelsbach , a daughter of Duke Otto I of Bavaria and Agnes von Loon .

Mathilde is mentioned in the following documents , among others :

  • A document dated December 11, 1215, in which 'Heinricus et Roppertus comites de Nassovva' acquired ownership of the Mainz Cathedral with the permission of 'uxorum nostrarum Methildis et Gertrudis' .
  • A document dated June 9, 1239, in which 'Heinricus… comes de Nassowe… collateralis nostra… Methildis' confirmed the dependence on the 'ecclesie in Nepphe' at Arnstein Monastery .
  • A document from July 20, 1245, in the 'Henricus comes de Nassowe et Methildis comitissa uxor eiusdem, Walramus primogenitus, ceterique liberi eorundem' toll from a bridge to Altenberg monastery .
  • A document from 1247, in which 'Heinricus comes de Nassowe et Mectildis comitissa… ecclesiam in Inferi [ori] Diffenbach' was given to the Arnstein Monastery, in which 'filiorum nostrorum Walerami, Ottonis, Henrici, Gerardi, Johannis' appeared as witnesses.

The necrology of the Arnstein monastery documented the death of 'Mecktildis comitisse de Nassauw sororis nostre' on October 28th. She is mentioned in a document from 1247, so she died on October 28, 1247 or a year later.

Mathilde married before December 11, 1215 with Count Heinrich II. Von Nassau (* around 1180 ; † April 26, 1247/48/49/50, before January 25, 1251).
