Louis Matias Karl Padin Varela (born June 23, 1980 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish actor of Spanish descent.

life and career

Matias Varela grew up as the son of Spanish parents in the Stockholm district of Södermalm . He only learned Swedish through school. In school he later met Gustaf Skarsgård , son of the well-known actor Stellan Skarsgård , and like him enrolled at Södra Latins Gymnasium after he had taught him something about acting technique.

Varela took his first role in the soap opera Nya tider , in which he appeared in over 40 episodes in 2000 as Miguel Santos . He subsequently appeared in a number of films, including Fröken Sverige , Stockholm Boogie and Storm . During this time, Varela stayed afloat as a construction worker alongside acting and read the Swedish bestseller Easy Money . After hearing that the book was about to be made into a film, he auditioned with director Daniél Espinosa for the role of the Swedish-Chilean drug dealer Jorge Salinas . Although the latter initially wanted to cast the role with a Chilean, Varela finally got the role. The film was released in 2010 under the title Easy Money and was a success. He also took on this role in the sequels, Easy Money II: Hard to Kill (2012) and Easy Money III: Life Deluxe (2013).

From 2011 to 2012 he played the role of police officer Jorge Chavez in several episodes of the mini-series Arne Dahl . He also took on other film roles in Engång i Phuket , Point Break and Assassin's Creed . Varela also had a few appearances in television series. He had guest roles in Covert Affairs , The Borgias and Ettor & nollor . In 2017 he was seen in the Netflix series Narcos as Jorge Salcedo , the security chief of the Cali cartel .

In addition to his native Spanish , Varela is also fluent in Swedish , English , Portuguese and Galician .
