Matthew Anthony "Matt" Derbyshire (born April 14, 1986 in Blackburn ) is an English football player who has been under contract with the Cypriot first division club Omonia Nicosia since 2016 .

Club career

Blackburn Rovers

Derbyshire moved in 2003 from the local club Great Harwood Town, where he scored nine goals in 18 missions, for a low transfer fee to the Blackburn Rovers . He turned down a move to Manchester United as he saw better prospects for a first-team spot at Blackburn and was a fan of the Rovers from his childhood . In 2004 he was loaned to Plymouth Argyle . There he managed not a single goal in 12 league games, so Mark Hughes brought him back to Blackburn. A short time later, Derbyshire was loaned to Wrexham AFC for three months , where he made a name for himself with ten goals in 16 games.

He scored his first goal for the Rovers on January 1, 2007 in a 3-0 win over Wigan Athletic , shortly afterwards he also promoted the ball in the FA Cup game against Everton . On January 13, 2007 he was against Arsenal for the first time in a Premier League game in the starting line-up. He scored his third goal in four games on January 20, 2007 against Manchester City . He continued his good form in the fourth round of the FA Cup when he scored two goals and set up one against Luton Town . He finished the Premier League in 2006/07 with five goals in 22 league games. In total, he scored nine goals in 30 games in all competitions. In the Premier League 2007/08 Derbyshire (23 games / 3 goals) was again used regularly.

Olympiacos Piraeus

In January 2009 Blackburn awarded him to the Greek champions Olympiacos Piraeus until the end of the Super League 2008/09 . There Derbyshire contributed five goals to defend their title in seven championship games. He also scored some important goals for Olympiacos in the Cup , including two goals in the cup final against AEK Athens . Then the Greek record champions signed the player for four years and a transfer fee of 3 million euros . In the Super League 2009/10 Derbyshire (19 games / 6 goals) missed with his team the renewed title win as runner-up behind Panathinaikos Athens . After Olympiacos coach Ernesto Valverde had informed him at the beginning of the 2010/11 season that he would no longer play a role in his plans, he moved to Birmingham City on August 16, 2010 on loan . With his new team he played in the Premier League 2010/11 . Derbyshire was used in only 13 league games by the end of the season and remained without a goal. Birmingham City secured the 2010/11 League Cup title by beating Arsenal 2-1 , but were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.

Nottingham Forest

On August 10, 2011 Matt Derbyshire signed a three-year contract with the English second division club Nottingham Forest, coached by Steve McClaren . Since he was not considered by the new coach Sean O'Driscoll , he moved on September 14, 2012 on loan to the third division club Oldham Athletic .

Rotherham United

After three years in Nottingham, he moved to the second division Rotherham United on May 30, 2014 .
