Matthew "Matt" Ryan (born June 23, 1984 in Sydney ) is a former Australian rower . In 2008 he won an Olympic silver medal with the Australian four-man without a helmsman .

Athletic career

Matt Ryan began rowing in 2002 and immediately won the four-man title at the Junior World Championships . In 2003 he won the bronze medal in eighth place at the U23 World Championships , in 2004 he won with the four-man with helmsman. In 2005 he entered the adult class for the first time at the World Championships and finished ninth in the four without a helmsman. In 2006 he won his first World Cup victory with the Australian eight in Poznan . At the 2006 World Championships in Eton, the eighth finished fourth. In the following year he finished eighth at the World Championships in Munich .

In 2008 Ryan switched to the four-man without a helmsman, who won the World Cup regatta in Lucerne with the cast of Matt Ryan, James Marburg , Cameron McKenzie-McHarg and Francis Hegerty . At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, the Australians won their preliminary run, in the semifinals they finished second behind the British, one and a half seconds behind. In the final, the British won by one second over the Australians, while the third-placed French were one and a half seconds behind the Australians.

In 2009 at the World Championships in Poznan , the British foursome won with almost two seconds ahead of the Australian crew, which competed in the same line-up as in 2008. In 2010 the four Australians finished fourth at the World Cup in Munich and fifth at the World Cup in Lucerne. For the World Championships in New Zealand , they moved to eighth, with William Lockwood , Matt Ryan, Francis Hegerty, Cameron McKenzie-McHarg, James Marburg, Samuel Loch , Nicholas Purnell , Joshua Dunkley-Smith and helmsman Tobias Lister . In the final, the Germany eight won ahead of the British, behind which the Australians won the bronze medal. 2011 Marburg, Hegerty and Ryan rowed again in the Australian eighth and reached fourth place at the World Championships in Bled . In 2012, the eighth ranked sixth in the World Cup in Lucerne and second in Munich. At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 , the eighth finished sixth. In 2015 Ryan returned again and finished ninth at the World Championships with eighth .
