Ossip Ivanovich Somow

Osip (Iosif) Ivanovich Somov ( Russian Осип (Иосиф) Иванович Сомов ; born June 1 . Jul / 13. June  1815 greg. In the village Otrada, Ujesd Klin , † April 26 jul. / 8. May  1876 greg. In St . Petersburg ) was a Russian mathematician , physicist and university professor .

Life

Somow came from the old noble family Somow, which traced back to Aslan-Mursa Tschelebei from the Golden Horde , who had passed to Dmitri Donskoi .

Somow graduated from the physics and mathematics faculty of Moscow University in 1835 as a candidate for physics and mathematics. For his work on the theory of certain algebraic equations of a higher degree, he received the Demidow Prize of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1838 . Until 1841 he worked as a math teacher at the Moscow Business School and the Moscow Noble Institute. When Nikolai Brashman Somov completed his Master - dissertation on integrals of algebraic irrational differentials with a variable in which he defended 1,841th

After promotion to the Master Somov was 1841 adjunct - professor at the Imperial University of St. Petersburg . In 1847 he defended his dissertation on the propagation of light waves in media without birefringence , with which he was awarded a doctorate in mathematics and astronomy and for which he received the Demidow Prize for the second time. In 1850 he published his book on the fundamentals of the theory of elliptic functions , for which he received the Demidow Prize for the third time. In 1852 he was elected a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. In 1856 he was appointed full professor at the University of St. Petersburg. In 1862 he became a full member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. 1862-1870 he headed the chair for applied mechanics of the traffic engineer corps in St. Petersburg (now St. Petersburg State University of Transport). In 1866 he received the honorary title of Honored Professor of the University of St. Petersburg . One of his students was Alexander Nikolajewitsch Korkin .

Somow's main research interests were calculus , vector analysis and elliptical functions, as well as applications in geometry and mechanics . He published the first Russian course on the theory of elliptic functions. After Abel Transon and Aimé-Henry Résal , Somow developed the concept of higher order acceleration . His investigations in the area between differential geometry and theoretical kinematics with the concept of higher-order acceleration made contributions to the exploration of space curves .

Somow was the owner of the Mikhailovskoye estate near his birthplace, Otrada. He was married to Praskovia Rostislavovna nee Golubitskaya. With her he had their son Pawel in 1852 , who became a physicist. Somow's younger brother Andrei Ivanovich Somow was an art historian . Somow's nephew Konstantin Andrejewitsch Somow was a painter .

Somov was buried in St. Petersburg in the Russian Orthodox part of the Smolensk Cemetery .
