The Mattawa ( English Mattawa River ; French Rivière Mattawa ) is a river that flows through the Canadian province of Ontario .
It rises in the east of North Bay the Trout Lake and ends 54 km downstream in the Ottawa River .
course
The river flows along an old fault through the highlands of Algoma . From Lake Talon to Mattawa it forms a canyon with walls up to 150 meters high.
history
Mattawa means "meeting of waters" in the language of Anishinabe . The river was an important traffic route for the local Indian tribes and for the first settlers in the area. It was mainly used for the extensive fur trade, which made the city of Mattawa an important trading center .
In the 19th century, the river gave access to large and still pristine wooded areas of Weymouth pine . The logs were floated down across the river . Rafting is still an important professional field in the region today. However, the river is mainly used for leisure activities. There are also two nature parks along the Mattawa.
Protected areas
43 km of the Mattawa River was declared in 1988 as a Canadian Heritage River ("Canadian Natural Heritage") and expanded in 1999 to its confluence with the Ottawa River. In addition, the route from the French River via Lake Nipissing , the La Vase River , the La Vase Portages to Trout Lake, the origin of the Mattawa River, was nominated for the Canadian Heritage Rivers System.
The Mattawa River Provincial Park and the Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park are along the river.
