Matthäikirche (Bingum)
The Lutheran Matthäikirche in Bingum ( East Friesland ) was built at the beginning of the 13th century and extensively rebuilt several times over the centuries.
history
The church was built in the first quarter of the 13th century as a Romanesque hall church and replaced the previous wooden church. On the east side it received an apse with a half-dome and three windows. In the Middle Ages, the community belonged to the Propstei Hatzum in the diocese of Münster until it joined the Lutheran faith around 1525. However, the majority of the church was Reformed . This resulted in 1653/54 during a new calling of a pastor at a Eucharistic controversy . Probably around 1700 the upper part of the walls was removed and a lower ceiling was put in. The bell tower from 1766 corresponds to the "parallel wall type". In 1793 the western front was renewed, the side portals bricked up and a new entrance was created on the western side. Due to the threat of flooding through the Ems , the floor is now one and a half meters higher. In the course of an extensive church renovation from 1959 to 1969, the wooden flat ceiling and the smaller round-arched windows on the north side were restored to match the original Romanesque church. The meanwhile enlarged windows on the south side were preserved. In 2012, a new triple bell was cast by Simon Laudy.
Furnishing
A baptismal font made of yellow Bentheim sandstone from the 14th century has been preserved. It is octagonal and has bas-reliefs . The red sandstone cafeteria on the altar probably dates from the pre-Reformation period. The pulpit dates from 1691 and was made by Frerick Albers. In 1966 the artist Joachim Schubotz (1933–2018) from Hanover designed the three leaded glass windows in the apse and in 1968 the altar cross. The church stalls were made in 1969. In the same year the organ was built by Jürgen Ahrend & Brunzema in the style of structuralism . The work has 13 registers on two manuals and pedal .
