Matthäus Vogel (also: Orneus ; born September 7, 1519 in Nuremberg ; † December 3, 1591 in Alpirsbach ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Leonhard Vogel's son came from a humble background. He had attended the St. Sebald School in Nuremberg and in 1534 began studying at the University of Tübingen . From there he moved in 1536 under the rectorate of Justus Jonas the Elder to the University of Wittenberg , where he attended the lectures of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon for five years . Then he became a teacher in Nuremberg, but continued his studies in Wittenberg, where he became a baccalaureate on April 6, 1541 and a master's degree in philosophical sciences on September 11, 1543 under the dean's office of Andreas Aurifaber . In 1544 he went to Lauf an der Pegnitz as a pastor and in 1548 as a deacon at the Jakobskirche in Nuremberg .

However, since he opposed the Augsburg Interim , he lost his position. In 1549 this event took him to Prussia, to the town of Labiau and in 1550 to Wehlau , where he was pastor for four years. In 1554 he moved to the Königsberg Cathedral as a preacher and in 1557 took over the professorship of theology at the University of Königsberg . At the Königsberg University he also took part in the organizational tasks and was rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semesters 1559/60 and 1563/64 .

He had also earned the recognition of his employer Albrecht von Prussia , who, among other things, commissioned him with a new version of the Prussian church order. As a supporter of Andreas Osiander's doctrine of justification , he was attacked by his opponents, especially Joachim Mörlin , and in 1566 had to give up his position in Königsberg due to the Osiander dispute . He went to Württemberg. After six months in Kirchheim, he found a new field of activity as a pastor in Hornberg in 1568 . In 1571 he became special superintendent and pastor in Göppingen and in 1579 Princely Württemberg councilor and abbot of Alpirsbach .
