Matthew Spender (born 1945 in London ) is a British painter, sculptor and biographer.
Life
Matthew Spender is a son of the poet Stephen Spender (1909–1995) and the pianist Natasha Spender (1919–2010). His mother kept up the facade of a normal family throughout her life, although Stephen Spender did not hide his homosexual relationships in public.
Matthew Spender studied history at Oxford University and then art at the Slade School of Fine Art . In 1967 he married the painter Maro Gorky, the eldest daughter of the Armenian-American surrealist artist Arshile Gorky (1904–1948), with whom he had been friends since 1961. The couple moved in 1968 as dropouts in the Tuscany to Gaiole in Chianti , they have two daughters.
Donor exhibited in England, Italy, Germany and France. In 1989 he had an exhibition at Berkeley Square Gallery in London. With the protection of his father he was able to sell an object to Francis Bacon , he avoided the homosexual stalking of his father's friends. Since the nineties he has concentrated on sculpture, which was staffage in Bernardo Bertolucci's 1996 film Feeling and Seduction . Spender teaches at the painting class of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence and is an honorary professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Carrara .
In 1999, Spender wrote a biography of Gorky's life before his eviction from Khorkom From a High Place: A Life of Arshile Gorky . After his mother's death in 2010, he moved back into his parents' house in Bayswater and began to work up his family history.
