Matthias Colerus, also: Collerius (* around 1530 in Altenburg , † April 22, 1587 in Jena ) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Born as the son of a councilor, he matriculated on June 19, 1546 at the University of Wittenberg . After he had obtained the academic degree of Magister in 1550 , he decided on the advice of Philipp Melanchthon to devote himself to the study of law. To do this, he went to the University of Leipzig , where his teachers Modestinus Pistoris and Christoph Zobel shaped his humanistic inclinations towards the practical reformer.

In 1558 he returned to Wittenberg and received his doctorate in law. He then became a professor at the University of Jena in 1559 , where, among other things, he was dean of the law faculty and was the rector of the academy three times . At that time he was drawn into the denominational disputes as a Philippist and had to give up his office in 1569 due to his synergistic attitude. He then worked as a member of the Saxon Court of Appeal in Leipzig and as Chancellor in Anhalt .

In 1573 he returned to Jena as Professor Primarius, where he was full professor of the Spruchkolleg on April 11, 1575 and from 1573 he was a member of the Court of Justice . He achieved a high reputation with his compendia written for practice. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Jena University and was its rector three times (summer semester 1562, summer semester 1568, winter semester 1575) .
