Matthias Drawe
Matthias Drawe (born February 4, 1963 in East Berlin ) is a German journalist , author , director and actor .
Life
Drawe grew up in a DEFA building in Potsdam-Babelsberg, on the border with West Berlin . Together with his mother and father, Hans Drawe , a DEFA dramaturge at the time , he managed a spectacular escape to West Berlin in 1970. With an unsecured ladder they climbed over the Berlin Wall and risked their lives in the process.
In the early 1980s, Drawe lived in an occupied house in Berlin-Kreuzberg , an experience that he processed in his novel Wilde Jahre in West Berlin .
Through a mutual friend, Drawe met the Turkish director Serif Gören in 1987 , who had taken on the direction of the film Yol - The Way (1982) for the imprisoned Yilmaz Güney in the early 1980s . Brats was in Kreuzberg to direct the comedy Police (1988) with the Turkish actor Kemal Sunal . Brats cast Drawe as petty criminals.
Inspired by brats, Drawe filmed The Art of Being a Man (1989) on Russian black and white material that friends had smuggled out of the GDR . In 1990 he founded the cellar cinema in Kreuzberg together with other independent filmmakers. Among other things, the early short films by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck , who was still unknown at the time and who later won an Oscar for The Lives of Others , were shown there.
After Drawe had made the films Der König von Kreuzberg (1990) and Der Elfenbeinturm (1992), he wrote the pilot film and the first episode of the ZDF series Lutz & Hardy with Karl Lieffen and Hans Korte in the leading roles.
In 1995 Drawe moved to New York City and worked there as a journalist for Deutschlandradio Kultur . Most of Drawe's radio reports were brought to life by actor Christian Brückner , the official dubbing voice of Robert De Niro . This gave the German listener the impression that it was De Niro who reported here from all over the world.
