Matthias Fletzberger (* 1965 in Vienna ) is an Austrian conductor and pianist .

Life

At the age of five he was taught piano and violin at the Vienna Music Academy (now the Music University ) as one of the youngest students. In 1977 he won first prize in the national music competition " Jugend musiziert " and was accepted into Hans Graf 's concert class, where he received his diploma in 1986. His other teachers include Jacques Rouvier , Tatjana Nikolaijewa , Leon Fleisher and Nicole Hénriot-Schweitzer.

While still a student, he won international competition prizes , such as the silver medal at the Busoni competition in Bolzano and first prize at the Bösendorfer competition in Vienna. From 1985 to 1991 he performed in solo evenings, piano concerts, chamber music evenings as well as in radio and television broadcasts on all continents.

Motivated by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Rolf Liebermann and taught by Ferdinand Leitner and Carl Melles , he turned to the theater. He worked as a director of studies in Salzburg and at the Prague State Opera , as the musical director of the Art Nouveau Theater in Vienna , as a conductor at the Wiener Festwochen and as Kapellmeister at the St. Gallen City Theater .

In 1998 there was an artistic reorientation. He was looking for a new approach to music by organizing “clubbing” (1970s, disco, house and techno ) in the Sofiensäle , the largest historical ballroom in Vienna, for up to 8,000 visitors per evening. At the same time, he tried to create a connection between classical music and clubbing by opening the house to opera and concert performances and also incorporating jazz and pop music into the overall concept.

In 2001 the Sofiensaal was badly damaged by fire. As a result, Fletzberger had to write off all the investments made and file for bankruptcy with his event company KulturConsult . In 2002, Fletzberger began a long-established Viennese discotheque to revitalize the "Atrium" (now the East Club ). In the summer of 2003, great success followed as an organizer with the summer scene Hochstrahlbrunnen at Schwarzenbergplatz and in summer 2005 with the EM lounge in the Vienna Kursalon . In the following years he withdrew from all artistic activities and worked as a consultant for various organizers and companies.

Since autumn 2008 he has been performing again both as a conductor and as a pianist (soloist, chamber musician and accompanist ). In 2011 he published his first CD / DVD with the violinist Lidia Baich with arrangements of well-known symphonic ballet works under the title "Violin in Motion" on Deutsche Grammophon . In January 2013 he conducted for the first time in America as part of the Salute to Vienna concert series .

In 2017 and 2018 he created the musical concept for the project "Fascination Wagner", of which he also conducted the world premiere on October 25 at the Forum Karlin in collaboration with the Narodni Divadlo Prague . He is also the conductor of the first "Ring Cycle" at the Seoul Arts Center, directed by Achim Freyer from 2018 to 2020.
