Matthias Groote

Matthias Groote , (born October 21, 1973 in Leer , East Frisia ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2005 to 2016 he was a member of the European Parliament . On September 11, 2016, Groote achieved an absolute majority in the district elections in the district of Leer as part of the municipal elections in Lower Saxony in 2016 and is active there as district administrator. He took office on November 1, 2016.

Life and work

After completing secondary school in 1990 at the Kreisrealschule in Westrhauderfehn , Groote initially worked as a freelancer in the editorial team of Fehntjer Kurier . He then completed 1991-1995 training as an industrial mechanic at the repair shop Opladen of Deutsche Bahn . He then did his civil service until 1996 and then went through further training to become a machine technician with a focus on industrial engineering until 1998. After completing further training, Groote began studying at the Wilhelmshaven University of Applied Sciences , which he completed in 2005 as a graduate industrial engineer (FH). Before joining the European Parliament, he worked as a sales engineer for Enercon .

Matthias Groote is married and has two daughters.

Political party

Groote joined the SPD in 1996 and initially became increasingly involved with the Jusos , of which he was chairman in the Leer district from 1997 to 2002; from 1999 to 2002 he was also deputy chairman of the Juso district association Weser-Ems . From 1997 to 2007 he was a member of the board of the SPD district association Leer and has been a member of the SPD district board of Weser-Ems since 2007. From 2003 Groote was part of the board of the Social Democratic Community for Local Politics (SGK) in the Weser-Ems district.

Groote has been a member of the local council of his hometown Ostrhauderfehn since 1996 , where he was also chairman of the SPD parliamentary group from 2001 to 2005. From 2001 to 2006 he was also a member of the district council of the district of Leer.

On October 26, 2005, Groote replaced Garrelt Duin , who had left the European Parliament, and was re-elected in the 2009 European elections. In January 2012 he replaced Jo Leinen as Chairman of the EP Environment Committee . He was also a member of the delegation for relations with Mexico and for Latin American countries. on. He was an alternate member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and the delegation for relations with the Arabian Peninsula. Matthias Groote was, among other things, the European Parliament's rapporteur for the Euro 5 emission standards for cars. Since July 2014, Groote has been spokesman for the Socialist Group in the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. He was also a deputy member of the Regional Development Committee (REGI).

Since March 2010 Groote was chairman of the non-partisan European Union parliamentary group European Parliament .

On September 11, 2016, Groote achieved an absolute majority in the district elections in the district of Leer as part of the municipal elections in Lower Saxony in 2016 , and for this reason left the European Parliament. Tiemo Wölken (SPD) moved up for Groote, he took up his mandate on November 21, 2016.
