Matthias Koch (* 1943 in Dresden ) is a German teacher , publisher and partner in the Berlin construction publishing house .

Life

Matthias Koch attended the Felix-Klein-Gymnasium in Göttingen and then studied German , Romance studies and theater studies first in Göttingen , then in Cologne and finally, interrupted by two semesters abroad at the Paris Sorbonne , at the Free University of Berlin . In 1970 he passed the first state examination for the office of student council at the Berlin State Academic Examination Office .

Koch worked as a teacher in Mülheim an der Ruhr until his retirement and lived there with his wife Ingrid Koch, who is also a teacher. Since the end of the 1990s, the family had invested the assets that came from their fathers' professional activity in the housing market of the unified Berlin. According to Koch, the next step was the development of a commercial property that should have a cultural focus among the users. In this situation, Matthias Koch took over Aufbau-Verlag in 2008 , which has been based in the specially built Aufbau Haus on Moritzplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg since 2011 . The construction of this "creative center" cost around 20 million euros. At the beginning of 2014, Koch changed the top management of the publishing house: he made Gunnar Cynybulk head of literature and Reinhard Rohn head of entertainment.

One of Koch's ideas was to unite the Aufbau and Eichborn publishers under one roof. According to his idea, Aufbau, with its Eastern history and its post-reunification mixture of high literature and " bestselling ", should complement Eichborn, with its roots in the Frankfurt spontaneous scene and a program of good non-fiction books and the "Other Library". Koch wanted to bring Eichborn to Berlin and keep it as a programmatically independent publisher. But the negotiations failed at the beginning of April 2011. The Eichborn board of directors had already issued terminations that were incorrect and Koch refused to cover the resulting costs. One could not agree again.

The owner and managing director of Aufbau-Verlag received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on November 28, 2018.
