Live and act

Matthias Kralj came into contact with the world of theater early on, as his father, Emil Kralj, was an actor and star of the Slovenian National Theater. His talent for drawing showed up early on. The political events caused the family with the nine-year-old Matthias to move from Ljubljana to Klagenfurt in 1942. In 1952 Kralj began to study stage design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and theater studies at the University of Vienna . An assistant at the Vienna Volksoper followed from 1958 engagements as a stage designer in Lübeck, Braunschweig and Mannheim and 1968 again in Klagenfurt, at whose city theater he worked under the direction of Herbert Wochinz . In 1976 Achim Benning brought him to the Burgtheater in Vienna . As head of the equipment department, Kralj was responsible for over 50 productions over the next 17 years.

True to his artistic credo "As little as possible - as much as necessary." Kralj's stage designs were characterized by economy and reduction, while at the same time they captured the spirit of the piece.

In total, Matthias Kralj created more than 250 stage sets and equipment in various European countries and worked with directors such as Achim Benning, Adolf Dresen , Alfred Kirchner , Leopold Lindtberg , Rudolf Noelte , Peter Palitzsch , Otto Schenk , Rudolf Steinboeck and Herbert Wochinz. In addition to guest appearances in Munich, Saloniki, Athens, Berlin, Salzburg, Lisbon and Zurich, he designed the stage for the Komödienspiele Porcia in Spittal an der Drau for 25 years .

Kralj has received teaching assignments from the Reinhardt Seminar , the Institute for Theater Studies at the University of Vienna and Stanford University (CA).

Since 1997 he has turned more and more to painting, as shown by exhibitions in Klagenfurt, Ljubljana, Trieste and Vienna.

Matthias Kralj has been married to costume designer Evelyne, née Frank, daughter of actress Ellen Frank , since 1966 . His daughter Julia comes from this marriage.
