Matthias Merkle (theologian)

Matthias Merkle (born February 24, 1816 in Bedernau , † November 10, 1881 in Wörishofen ) was a Catholic clergyman and member of the German Reichstag .

Life

He attended grammar school in Dillingen , studied philosophy and theology in Munich and was ordained a priest there on August 30, 1840. As a chaplain in Grönenbach , he taught Latin to Sebastian Kneipp, who was largely related to him . After his ordination, he worked as an assistant chaplain in pastoral care for a total of four years before he was appointed professor at the Lyceum in Dillingen in 1844 , where he taught moral theology and pedagogy , as well as patrology and religious philosophy .

In 1865 he was appointed a spiritual councilor . From 1864 on he edited the Augsburger Pastoralblatt. In 1871 Pius IX appointed him . to the papal house prelate . In 1874 he was transferred to Passau as a professor of moral theology . In 1881 he asked to retire because of a liver disease. From 1874 he was a member of parliament for the constituency of Dillingen in the Bavarian state parliament for a few years and in the German Reichstag until his death . There he represented the constituency Schwaben 5 (Kaufbeuren, Füssen) for the center from 1874 to 1881 . He spent his last months with his former Latin student Sebastian Kneipp in Wörishofen.
