Matthias Tomczak

Matthias Tomczak (born October 29, 1941 in Wilhelmshaven ; † May 30, 2019 in Adelaide , South Australia) is a German oceanographer . He is Professor Emeritus of Oceanography at Flinders University of South Australia in Adelaide and has lived in Australia since 1979 .

Life

education and profession

Matthias Tomczak was a oceanographic work at the University of Kiel Dr. rer. nat. doctorate and habilitation at the University of Hamburg .

From 1965 to 1969 he worked at the Oceanographic Research Institute of the Federal Armed Forces in Kiel (OFBw), from 1969 to 1976 he was at the Institute for Oceanography at the University of Kiel, and then he did research at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg until 1977 .

Because of his political activities for the Communist Federation of West Germany (KBW), for which he ran in the federal election in Kiel in 1976, Matthias Tomczak ran into difficulties with his last two employers.

Activity abroad

In 1977 Matthias Tomczak moved to the Department of Oceanography at the University of Liverpool for research purposes , where he stayed until 1979, after which he emigrated to Australia. There he worked for the state research organization CSIRO until 1984 and then moved to the University of Sydney , where he became director of the Marine Studies Center. In 1992 he accepted an appointment at Flinders University in Adelaide as professor of oceanography and was its director until the Flinders Institute for Atmospheric and Marine Sciences was closed. He retired in October 2006 and lives in Adelaide .

During his time in England M. Tomczak with the abbreviation "mat" was England - Correspondent , after 1979 Oceania - Correspondent for the Communist People's Newspaper .

As a university lecturer, Tomczak was one of the pioneers in providing free information on the Internet. Matthias Tomczak is one of the founders of the Support Association for the Women of Afghanistan . His work for this organization has been recognized by the Senate of the Australian federal government.
