Matti Siimanainen
Matti Siimanainen (born October 11, 1920 in Joutseno , South Karelia , † November 20, 2010 in Toronto , Ontario ) was a Finnish wrestler who competed primarily in the Greco-Roman style. He celebrated his greatest success with the world title in 1950.
At the world championship tournament in Stockholm in 1950 he won the welterweight title . He won against the Turks Celal Atik , 1948 lightweight Olympic champion and two-time European champion, and against the Swede Gösta Andersson , 1948 welterweight Olympic champion. Siimanainen, who had not appeared internationally before, surprisingly became world champion.
After this success, things calmed down around Siimanainen, he no longer competed in international championships.
Finnish champion was Matti Siimanainen in 1947 and 1949. He wrestled for the clubs Korven Honka from Joutseno and the Helsingin Atleettiklubi .
